Yudi and Moro are probably the names of the two dogs, one brown and white, one black – here curled up together and sleeping peacefully. In January 1933 Frances sent a batch of watercolours from Ibiza to London and described them as ‘mainly Cat & Dog subjects, something novel for me – I must say, in this clear ivory light every common object looks important & significant … things appear in stark simplicity minus all detail … Of course, later on, this intense sun light will convert colour & form into absolute negation but at the moment there is complete lovlieness… There is a special breed of Island dog which goes so well in the landscape – long legged fleet fawn & white hounds which really look & are dogs – not the inbred animal as we know it in England – something out of something else – but pure dog – doggey – unfriendly but not at all mauvais – and happily nearly always in good condition & cared for.’20 This work was first shown at the Leicester Galleries in 1935.
